Royal Marriage. cards

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 31st, 2007

Royal Marriage is a solitaire card game using a deck of 52 playing cards.

The game is so called because the player seems to remove anything that comes between the Queen and the King of the same suit for them to “marry.” Although the King and the Queen may be of any suit, commonly it is the King and Queen of Hearts that are being “wed.” For this same object, this game is also called Betrothal.

The Queen of the suit chosen (most commonly the Queen of Hearts) is placed immediately on the table while her corresponding King (in this case, the King of Hearts) will always be dealt last. The remaining fifty cards are shuffled and placed on the top of the King.

Cards are dealt one at a time to the right of the Queen. When a pair of cards with the same rank or suit are found to be separated by one or two cards, those in-between cards are discarded. Afterwards, the player can look for any resulting pairs with in-between cards to be discarded.

The game is won when Queen and the King are brought together with all other cards discarded.

Bicycle Playing Cards. Iraqi playing cards for

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 31st, 2007

Bicycle Playing Cards have been manufactured by the The United States Playing Card Company since 1885. “Bicycle” is a trademark of that company.

During World War II they produced cards that when submerged in water could be peeled apart and both halves had a map on the inside. When all the cards were put together it made a large map. These were supplied to POWs so if they escaped they would have a map.

The company provided crates of Ace of Spades cards for U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War. It was erroneously believed that the Viet Cong believed the card to be a symbol of death and would flee at the sight of the Ace. In actuality the Ace meant nothing to the Viet Cong, however the belief did improve the U.S. soldiers’ morale. Thousands of decks of these Aces were shipped to Vietnam where the Aces were purposely scattered throughout the jungle and villages during raids. Similar cards were produced during Operation Desert Shield in 1991, immediately prior to the invasion of Iraq by US forces. Due to the shortness of the conflict these cards never saw battle.

Bicycle is a standard issue deck of cards consisting of 52 red and black colored cards. Each card may have one of the four suits: spades, clubs (sometimes called "clovers"), diamonds, and hearts. The numbers on the cards range from 2 to 10, then proceed onward to "Jack", then "Queen", "King", and "Ace". The "Ace" has also been known to be the first card in a typical deck. The bicycle trademark is usually printed on the Ace of spades. The deck comes with the hand ranks of poker, an information card, and two jokers.

Bicycle playing cards are sold in a variety of designs. There are a series of Vintage backs, bridge, pinochle, Pastel color cards (which are colors light blue, lime green, and pink) and Lo Vision cards that are designed for the visually impaired. These Lo Vision cards contain large numbers on the face in a light blue color. Other types of cards with varying backs and colors are produced for magic.

Bicycle playing cards are commonly used in magic (illusion) and flourishes, and are generally considered by magicians as the best playing cards for most tricks.

Bicycle playing cards are comparable to Tally-ho Playing Cards or Bee Playing Cards which are commonly used in casinos worldwide.

In honor of the said chieftain, his name was later merged to form the name of the municipality.

Alhambra (solitaire). flower cards are smaller

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 26th, 2007

Alhambra is a solitaire card game which is played using two decks of playing cards. Its unusual feature is akin to that of Crazy Quilt: the cards in the reserve are built either on the foundations or on a waste pile.

First, one King and one Ace is removed from the shuffled decks and placed in a row as foundations. Right below them, eight piles of four cards are dealt; these piles serve as the reserve.

The King foundations are built down by suit while the Ace foundations are built up, also by suit.

The top cards of the reserve piles are available only to be built on the foundation; there is no building. When there are no more moves possible, the stock is dealt, one card at a time, on the waste pile, the top card of which is available. The cards on the wastepile can be built on the foundations, while it can be built upon by cards from the reserve piles.

When the stock is exhausted, the waste pile (which by then already includes cards from the reserve) is picked up and turned over to become the new stock. This can be done twice in the entire game.

The game finishes soon after the stock is exhausted the third time. The game is won when all cards are built into the foundations.

Miss Milligan. cards

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 26th, 2007

Miss Milligan is a solitaire card game which is played using two decks of playing cards. According to Peter Arnold, author of Card Games for One, this classic game’s popularity in England is due to the player’s ability to recover from seemingly hopeless positions.

First, eight cards are dealt in a row; they are bases for eight columns in the game. Any ace that becomes available is put onto the foundations, to be built up by suit. Other cards are built down by alternating color. One card can be moved at a time, although a sequence can also be moved in part or in whole as one unit. When an empty column occurs, only a King or a sequence starting with a King can be placed on it.

When no more moves can be made, a new set of eight cards is dealt, each for every column, whether full or empty. Then the game resumes until all possible moves are exhausted, after which a new set of eight cards is placed. This cycle of dealing new cards and making moves continues until the stock is exhausted.

After the stock has run out, there is no redeal. However, there is special move called either “waiving” or “weaving,” depending on the rule set the player follows. The player can do this special move by picking a card or a sequence of cards up and set it aside (this is the dominant rule; some rule sets state that only one card can be picked up). The card or sequence can later be placed back into the table at anytime as long as it can be built. Only one card or sequence of cards can be set aside at a time. Computerized solitaire games that include this game include a reserve for this purpose.

The game ends when no more useful moves can be made. The game is won if all cards are built onto the foundations.

Baroness (solitaire). playing cards

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 22nd, 2007

Baroness is a solitaire card game that is played with a deck of 52 playing cards. Also known as Five Piles and Thirteens, it is a game that has an arrangement that is almost like that of Aces Up but with the game play of Pyramid.

Five cards are dealt in a row; they will form the bases of the five piles, the top cards of which are available for play.

In order to win, one has to remove Kings and pairs of cards that total 13. In this game, spot cards are taken at face value, Jacks value at 11, Queens 12, and Kings 13. So the following combinations of cards are discarded:

  • Queen and Ace
  • Jack and 2
  • 10 and 3
  • 9 and 4
  • 8 and 5
  • 7 and 6
  • Kings on their own.

When gaps occur, they are filled by the top cards of the other piles; but when there are not enough cards to do this (less than five), cards from the stock are used.

When gaps are filled and no kings and/or pairs of cards totalling 13 are present, five new cards are dealt from the stock, one onto each pile. Game play then continues, with the top cards of each pile, as mentioned above, are available. This cycle of discarding and dealing of new cards goes on until the stock has been used up.

The game is successfully won when all cards have been discarded.

Parallels (solitaire). cards

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 22nd, 2007

Parallels is a solitaire card game which is played with two decks of playing cards. It is so called because the cards are lined up in rows parallel to each other, so to speak.

First, one king and one ace of each suit is removed and the aces and kings are each lined into columns to form the foundations. The aces are built up while the kings are built down all by suit.

Between the two foundation columns, the player deals a row of ten cards, forming the tableau. All of these cards are available for play on the foundations and the spaces they leave behind are immediately filled from the stock.

When play comes to a stand still, a second row of ten cards is dealt below the first row. All cards are still available for play and the spaces left behind are immediately filled from the stock.

When play comes to a stand still a second time, a third row of ten cards is dealt. At this point onwards, the following rules apply:

  • A card is available to be built to the foundations if at least one of its narrower edges is free. Therefore, the cards at the top and bottom rows are available for play and cards in the middle rows become available after a card immediately above or below it is played.
  • There is no compulsion in filling spaces in the tableau. As long as there are moves available for the player to make, spaces can be filled later.
  • All spaces in the tableau must be filled when play goes on a standstill. The order is from left to right, top to bottom. There is no building at this point.
  • Only when the existing spaces in the tableau are filled is the time another row of ten cards is dealt at the bottom of the existing rows.
  • Peeking on the next card in the stock is absolutely not allowed; doing so will force that card to be dealt to the tableau.

Also, reversals are allowed in the game, i.e. when the two foundations of the same suit meet at one point, the player can move the cards from one foundation to the other except the base cards (ace and king) of the foundations.

The game ends when play stops after the stock has run out. The game is won when all cards are built into the foundations.

Blind Hookey. cards

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 20th, 2007

Blind Hookey is a card game played with a full pack of cards, sometimes used for the purpose of gambling.

The players, of whom there may be any number, cut for deal, the lowest having the preference. The pack is then shuffled by the player on the dealer’s right hand, and afterwards, if he so please, by the dealer himself, after which it is cut by the right-hand player. The two halves are then re-united, and the pack is passed to the player on the left of the dealer, who cuts from the top a small quantity of cards (not less than four, nor more than his due proportion of the pack). The pack is then passed to the next player, who cuts a similar portion, and so on round the circle, the cards left belonging to the dealer. No one looks at his cards, but makes his stake on pure speculation; hence the name “blind” hookey. The dealer then turns up his cards, and shows the bottom one; the other players do the same. Each player holding a higher card than that of the dealer receives the amount of his stake; all below or equal pay the dealer. This is repeated until a hand occurs in which the dealer is a loser all round, when the deal is at an end, and the next player deals.

Alternative method

The cards are shuffled and cut, before the dealer cuts them into three portions. Two of these are for the company, the third for himself. The other players place their stakes on whichever two packets they please, the rejected packet being taken by the dealer.

The stakes having been made, the cards are turned up, and the players receive or pay as the bottom cards of their packets prove to be higher or lower than that of the dealer.

Addition of natural numbers. representing the numbers

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 20th, 2007

Addition of natural numbers is the most basic arithmetic operation. The operation addition takes two natural numbers, the augend and addend, and produces a single number, the sum. The set of natural numbers will be denoted by N, and “0″ will be used to denote the natural number which is not the successor of any other natural number.

Notation and terms

The operation of addition, commonly written as the infix operator “+”, is a function +: N × NN. For natural numbers a, b, and c, we write

<math>a + b = c</math>

Here, a is the augend, b is the addend, and c is the sum.

Definition

Assume that N has been defined by the Peano postulates. We let S(a) denote the successor of a.

Addition is defined inductively by fixing the augend. In other words, we let a be any arbitrary, but fixed natural number, and we then make the following definitions:

  • a + 0 = a [A1]
  • a + S(b) = S(a + b) [A2]

By the recursion theorem, this defines a unique function “a +”: NN. In words, it says that adding zero to a gives back a, and that applying the successor function to the addend has the effect of applying the successor function to the sum.

Since a was an arbitrary natural number, we can “put together” all these functions into a single binary operation N × NN.

Properties

The following are three immediate and important properties of addition which can be deduced from the definition.

  • Associativity: for all natural numbers a, b, and c, we have
<math>(a + b) + c = a + (b + c);\,</math> (proof)
  • Commutativity: for all natural numbers a and b, we have
<math>a + b = b + a;\,</math> (proof)
  • Identity element: for all natural numbers a, we have
<math>a + 0 = 0 + a = a.\,</math> (proof)

Together, these three properties show that the set of natural numbers N under addition is a commutative monoid.

Salic Law (solitaire). cards

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 19th, 2007

Salic Law is a solitaire card game using two decks of 52 playing cards each. It is named after the Salic Law which prohibits women from ascending to the throne or obtaining inheritance.

First, the Queens are taken out of the stock. Then a King is placed on the tableau. The rest on the cards are shuffled and dealt on the King to form a column. The player deals as many cards over the King until another King appears, starting a new column. This is done until all eight Kings are laid out and all cards have been dealt, resulting in eight columns of various lengths.

During dealing, whenever an Ace appears, it is put onto the foundations. In fact, once aces are in the foundations over the kings, they can be built up to Jacks regardless of suit, even while dealing is in progress as long as the top cards of the columns already dealt are available for play, as well as any applicable card that appears during dealing.

Once all cards have been dealt, building to the foundations continue. Cards on the tableau cannot be built on each other. However, a column containing just a King is considered vacant and any card can be placed there. One card can be moved at a time and as mentioned earlier, the top card of each column is available for play.

The game is won when all cards available are placed on the foundations with the Jacks on the top of the foundations and the Kings exposed.

Sometimes, players still give the Queens a decorative role by putting them between the foundations and the King columns or shuffling them with the rest of the deck and putting them between the foundations and the columns later.

Spelling Bee (card trick). Card

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 19th, 2007

The Spelling Bee also known as Cards That Know Their Names, is a magic effect with cards where the magician uses thirteen cards. He then spells out cards one at a time, moving a card from the top of the packet to the bottom for each letter. For example, he spells “Ace”, moving one card from the top of the packet to the bottom as he says “A”, another as he says “c”, and a third as he says “e”. The next card is turned over, and it is an ace. The ace is removed from the packet and the process is repeated for “two”, “three”, and so on, up to “queen”, until the magician is holding only one card. This last card is a king.

Method

Before starting the performance, the magician has secretly arranged the thirteen cards in the following order from top to bottom: 3-8-7-A-Q-6-4-2-J-K-10-9-5 for Ace to King. For Two to Ace it is J-4-9-2-K-8-A-5-7-3-Q-10-6

The trick is then performed just as described above.
